Dr. Teresa Ching
Senior Research Scientist
Teresa leads the Outcomes study. She received her PhD in Phonetics and Linguistics from the University of London. Her areas of specialty include amplification for children, speech intelligibility and the joint use of hearing aids and cochlear implants. She is the editor of the Australian and New Zealand Journal of Audiology. Teresa frequently speaks at national and international conferences, and has authored more than 40 articles in scientific journals.
Kate Crowe
Research Speech Pathologist
With a double degree in Speech Pathology (Honours) and Arts from the University of Newcastle, Kate is a NAATI accredited interpreter in Auslan-English and also gained a Diploma in Teaching English as a Foreign Language. Kate has worked as a Speech Pathologist in schools for hearing impaired children and is currently a research speech pathologist at NAL. Having taugh linguistics at TAFE and the Auslan program at the University of Newcastle, she is now dedicating much of her time to her PhD assessing language skills of CALD children. She is a current member of Speech Pathology Australia and participates in the continuing professional development program.
Vivienne Martin
Research Speech Pathologist
In late 2007, Viv dived into her role on the Outcomes project with great enthusiasm and energy. After graduating from the University of Sydney as a Speech Pathologist, her time has been divided between DADAC and the private sector, working with both children and adults with speech, language, voice and swallowing.
Jessica Thomson
Research Speech Pathologist
After graduating from the University of Newcastle with a Bachelor of Speech Pathology, Jessica has worked in both the community and clinical setting providing both assessments and intervention to children with speech, language, fluency, voice and swallowing difficulties. Jessica has also worked in a hearing clinic providing speech and language intervention to children with hearing impairments and auditory processing difficulties. Jessica has recently joined NAL and the LOCHI team in 2010. Jessica is a current member of speech Pathology Australia and participates in the continuing professional development program.

Vicky Zhang
Research Paediatric Audiologist
Vicky joined the LOCHI Study in early 2009 after completing her PhD in Audiology from the University of Hong Kong. Vicky has over 8 years clinical, training and research experience in the area of hearing assessment and rehabilitation for infants and children. She has co-authored more than 10 articles published in academic journals, and was awarded several prizes from a variety of international conferences and academic institutes. Her current research interests include amplification for children, electrophysiology, effective screening techniques in neonatal hearing screening. In her free time, she enjoys swimming, playing badminton, travelling and photography.
Sanna Hou
Paediatric Audiologist
Sanna juggles her time between the LOCHI study at NAL and Liverpool Australian Hearing centre in Liverpool. She is tireless in her dedication to her field and has a great passion for the children and families who come under her care. Since joining the LOCHI team in 2008, Sanna has become and invaluable source of experience, insight and smiles.

Gerrie Krynda

Melanie Reid
Project Coordinator
After graduating in Psychology from the University of Western Sydney, Melanie spent a number of years working in a brain imaging laboratory running visual and auditory studies predominantly on dyslexia, autism, stuttering and the development of language in English and Mandarin speaking children. This has resulted in co-authoring book chapters, periodicals and international conference presentations. Additionally she has extensive experience working as a youth worker in youth accommodation facilities provided for adolescents facing homelessness. Since joining the LOCHI team in early 2011, Melanie has been able to combine her passion and experience in research and psychology with her skills in organisation and administration
Jessica Sjahalam-King
Research Assistant
With a degree in Anthropology from University of Macquarie, Jess is now studying a Masters in Social Development at UNSW. After volunteering with the LOCHI afternoon tea in 2008, she joined the team full time in June 2009 and further diversifies the talent pool of researchers working on this project.
